Primary Functions
The Filter/Lube Technician is responsible for changing filters in campus HVAC equipment, greasing motors and fans, changing oil in air compressors and vacuum pumps, replacing belts on fans and running weekly checks on building emergency generators and keeping them fueled. Position is responsible for conducting weekly checks on all campus air compressors, draining holding tanks of any moisture and checking belt wear. Under the general supervision of the technical service supervisor, this person maintains a yearly filter inventory, cutting or ordering and delivering filters to appropriate buildings. This position also requires cleaning heating and air conditioning coils on a regular schedule. Further, it requires the re-insulating of piping when pipe insulation has been removed. The technician will be required to discard old filters and belts and keep mechanical rooms clean and orderly.
Position will demonstrate: understanding of equipment and building needs as they relate to the replacement of filters and belts in heating and cooling equipment; ability to change oil and filters in both air compressors and vacuum pumps; knowledge of the types and amounts of grease needed to apply to bearings; ability to check and adjust belts and belt alignment with motors and sheaves; ability to determine belt wear; knowledge of how long a belt can operate before replacement is required; working knowledge of air compressors and emergency generators in order to perform checks; ability to fuel generators as needed; ability to ensure that air compressors are not leaking oil and water is not in holding tanks; ability to complete maintenance lists and a tight maintenance schedule; ability to maintain necessary inventory; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; organizational skills to complete tasks with critical deadlines while paying attention to detail; knowledge of heating and air conditioning equipment as to filters, belts, and air compressors; ability to learn and apply The University of Montana and departmental policies and procedures.
Minimum Job Qualifications
High school graduation and at least two (2) years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience in the standard practices, methods, and processes in the use of materials, tools, and equipment of the trade: filters, bearings, belts, air compressors, air conditioners, vacuum pumps, and emergency generators
Demonstrated experience with changing filters, greasing bearings, adjusting and aligning belts, determining belt wear, performing checks on equipment, fueling generators, insulating pipe, completing maintenance lists and maintaining tight schedules
Experience working with various types of equipment including vacuum pumps, air compressors, emergency generators, air conditioners, heaters, motors and fans
Demonstrated experience in maintaining inventory and checklists
Knowledge of safety rules and procedures related to the trade with the ability to assess potential environmental hazards
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Demonstrated interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills, including ability to relate well to diverse groups of people and to establish and maintain good working relationships

Must be able to perform: lifting from ground to 36", up to 70#; ground to overhead, up to 50#; carrying: front carrying up to70# for 50feet, and one hand carry up to 70# for 50feet; pushing/pulling: (during the use of tools)100# sustained; static truck forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools; reaching with arms in all directions, including overhead; working from various positions (squatting and on knees); balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold; use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools(4 ½" to 5 ½" circumference needing an average of 50# of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100#). A Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.
