Primary Functions
Position is responsible for supervising, coordinating, developing, designing, and implementing all external campus landscape installations, and providing external grounds and landscape maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: performing and supervising maintenance and improvements to campus; coordinating and scheduling landscaping, trash removal, chemical applications and plant production by means of pruning and shearing of all trees and shrubs; performing and supervising snow removal of 12 miles of sidewalks and over 400 building entrances; performing and supervising maintenance of football practice field and intramural sports fields; safe operation of heavy equipment pertaining to grounds maintenance; determining and coordinating irrigation needs and scheduling time tables for the entire campus; implementing and supervising an Integrated Pest Management Plan and Plant Health Care Systems; identifying and correcting plant and shrub disease-related problems; recommending the short- and long-range needs for the campus; overseeing turf research projects and maintenance; performing daily and weekly summary review of project installations, maintenance tasks, and employee performance; managing all pertinent office functions; maintaining personnel files, project reports, internal accounting files, equipment schedules, material files, operational logs and standard operating procedures manual; providing cost estimates for landscape installation and grounds maintenance; determining, recommending and writing specifications for all equipment and supplies used by the grounds crew to include: fertilizers, pesticide products, etc.; hiring, training, and supervising Grounds Crew employees; providing field support when necessary for all field projects.
Position will demonstrate: thorough knowledge of Natural Resource Management techniques; training and experience in turf operations; thorough knowledge, certification, and experience in all arborist operations; knowledge and proficiency to provide safety training; education and certifications necessary to implement and sustain an arboricultural program; skill in horticultural principles; experience with tree climbing, pruning, and aerial bucket used for pruning; scientific and technical writing and computer based skills to implement the Integrated Pest Management Plan, Plant Health Care Systems, and EPA databases; thorough knowledge of applicable codes, ordinances, specifications and standards affecting the landscape, agronomy, and arborist industries; knowledge and experience in technical and report writing for professional publications, legal concerns, and grants; ability to establish and maintain project schedules; knowledge of personnel policies and procedures regarding recruitment, employee relations, performance review, and the progressive disciplinary process; proven ability to effectively maintain working relationships.
Minimum Job Qualifications
High school graduation and five (5) years of experience supervising a large grounds crew, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Extensive knowledge in the area of proper care and maintenance of ornamental plants and turf
Working knowledge of landscaping design, techniques and implementation
Demonstrated knowledge of proper planting, advance pruning, fertilization, watering, tree surgery, and propagation techniques
Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures with the ability to lead, manage, hire, train, evaluate, coach and discipline staff
Skill in the operation of personal computers, related word processing software and hardware, with the ability to learn new software programs
Must be a certified chemical applicator
Must be, or be able to become, a certified arborist within 6 months of date of employment
Ability to safely operate a variety of machinery/equipment used in the grounds maintenance operation
Exercises will be given at the time of interview include plant identification of trees and shrubs, equipment operation, and computer skills.

Must be able to perform: lifting from ground to 60”, up to 50#; ground to 30”, up to 80#; carrying: front carrying up to70# for 50feet; right and left hand carry up to 75# for wheelbarrow handling; overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling) for up to three minutes at a time; moving equipment and supplies weighing up to 50# on a frequent basis and up to 100# on an occasional basis; perform push/pull activity; possess hand and finger coordination; be able to reach, climb, crouch, balance, twist, crawl, and kneel; must be able to work with chemicals, dust, fumes, and odors associated with indoor and outdoor environments. A Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.
