Director of Communications
National-Louis University
National-Louis University was founded as the National College of Education in 1886. Today, NLU serves nearly 12,000 students from five Chicago area campuses, in addition to campuses in Wisconsin and Florida. Three colleges comprise NLU - the National College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Management and Business. As we continue our stride towards excellence, we are in search of a Director of Communications.
The Director of Communications will be responsible for shaping and managing an integrated program of communications to promote the University’s strategic direction and brand promise. This position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.
Specific duties will include: Directing the concepting and production of high-impact print, digital, event-based, and other communications vehicles based on clearly defined objectives, audiences, market data and insights, and strategic intent; Managing creative and production staff, the department’s communications project workflow, and related budgets to maximize the value and impact of institutional resources; Partnering with the VP of Marketing and Communications, and the Director of Marketing, to manage the department as a whole and ensure that it achieves goals set by University leadership; Co-directing the redevelopment of the National Louis website (in 2011) and maintaining its effectiveness as a comprehensive communications tool moving forward; Stewarding the National Louis brand by ensuring adherence to University graphic identity, messaging, and content guidelines, and by providing tools and services to University departments; Working with counterparts across the University, and with NLU’s public relations agency, to identify and develop stories that illustrate the University’s achievements and points of distinction and developing an internal client service protocol, and serving as chief liaison, to ensure that departments across the University are appropriately supported with communications efforts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required. 10+ years experience in communications management, with at least several years of experience in the higher education or non-profit sectors. Experience leading integrated teams of communications practitioners (such as designers, web developers, copywriters, videographers, social media managers, etc.) including working understanding of the technical dimensions of their roles; Excellent writing and editing skills, including ability to integrate and present complex information; High-level organizational skills such as design of workflow, staffing, and scheduling systems; Understanding of higher education communications issues and appreciation of academic culture. Ability to develop strong collaborative partnerships and to earn trust within an organization.
