Westmont College is an undergraduate, residential, Christian, liberal arts community serving God’s kingdom by cultivating thoughtful scholars, grateful servants and faithful leaders for global engagement with the academy, church and world. Thanks to a generous gift, the college is establishing the Martin Family Institute for Christianity and Culture, which will include the Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation. Founded in 1937, Westmont features bachelor of arts and sciences degrees in 26 majors. Typically, the diverse student body of 1350 includes 150 students in a variety of off-campus programs.

Position Description:
Director, Martin Family Institute for Christianity and Culture
Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation

Position will begin July 1, 2011

Westmont College seeks a Director of the newly established Martin Family Institute for Christianity and Culture and Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation. The director will report directly to the provost while providing primary leadership and oversight of the Institute and Center. The overarching vision of the Institute is to develop:
• Programs appropriate for the Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation
• Programs appropriate for the Center for World Christianity, which focuses on the role of culture, social theory and Christian thought in the shape, formation, and renewal of societies and cultures worldwide
• A Visiting Fellows program
• A possible proposal for exploring the development of an undergraduate, interdisciplinary major, working in conjunction with the Provost and relevant academic departments
• An extra-curricular program that emphasizes spiritual formation and character development for all facets of the academy, church and world

The first priority is to develop the Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation. It is our hope that this center will contribute to the creation of a new generation of thought leaders capable of articulating the uniqueness and the philosophical, theological and biblical rationale for Christian spiritual formation. This understanding includes knowing ourselves honestly and openly before God and one another, cultivating a working understanding of how to follow the life and spirit of Jesus, and restoring humans to fullness of life through the work and power of the Holy Spirit.

Qualified applicants will possess:
1. A Ph.D. in a relevant field.
2. A lifestyle consistent with the practices and commitments of Christian spiritual formation.
3. Working knowledge of the relevant resources in the fields of Christian spiritual formation including a working knowledge of Dallas Willard’s work as well as other texts central to this movement.

Qualified applicants also will have the interest, along with the demonstrated capacity, to:
1. Develop curricular and co-curricular programs in collaboration with appropriate departments and faculty.
2. Build integrative programs that combine theology, philosophy, psychology, and the arts.
3. Start and develop institutes and centers. This necessitates a demonstrated capacity in fund development.
4. Convene top scholars and scholarship in relevant fields including, but not limited to the fields of theology, philosophy, Christian spiritual formation, social and cultural theory, and issues of relevance to Christians worldwide.
5. Host annually a visiting fellows program that assesses the state of Christianity worldwide.
6. Provide resources and initiatives to expand the availability, accessibility and understanding of Dallas Willard’s work.
7. Create research resources for understanding and expanding the reach and influence of Christian thought in all of the disciplines including the discipline of spiritual formation.
8. Possess a significant understanding and background in Christian spiritual formation including demonstrated working experience in the field.
9. Coordinate with and encourage centers of spiritual formation at other colleges and universities.
10. Sponsor conferences, retreats, pilgrimages and service opportunities, which contribute to the Institute and Center’s overall objectives.
11. Work with the directors of the other centers in assisting the college in fulfilling its overall mission.
12. Expand the offerings of the Institute as opportunities arise or present themselves.

Additional Qualifications:
1. Proven track record in higher education administration.
2. Experience working in a higher education context reflective of a deep commitment to Christian spiritual formation.
3. Proven ability to work well with other members of an academic community.
4. Ability to handle conflict and build collegiality.
5. Technologically-inclined and interpersonally savvy.
