Web Developer/Site Administrator

Inside Higher Ed is seeking a Site Manager with hands-on skills as well as the creative and technical vision to help us grow our business. You will be responsible for design, development and day to day management of site functionality; site maintenance; and troubleshooting. You’ll work closely with our current Technology Manager (our one-man infrastructure team) to integrate the hardware and systems required to support our Web platform.

Essential duties and responsibilities: Inside Higher Ed is seeking a broad range of capabilities, including but not limited to:

  • Page development and deployment, including revisions to existing pages
  • Web site redesign to accommodate changes based on user feedback and, if applicable, the integration of new technologies
  • Site enhancements (e.g., calendars, polls, personalization, online discussions, third-party integration, etc.)
  • Development and deployment of temporary promotional pages
  • Development of HTML e-mail marketing materials
  • Development of databases to support journalistic projects, including display of database content on the site

Skills and experience sought include:

  • Ability to coordinate projects involving Inside Higher Ed staff and external consultants
  • Project management ability, including managing resources, assets, schedules and budgets to ensure timely, current, and cost effective site updates.
  • User interface and workflow design.
  • Experience with Web based marketing strategies (cost-per-click, optimization for search engines, e-mail and other message delivery mechanisms, etc.)
  • Sound judgment, analytical, leadership, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments while working under tight deadline pressure

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a BA/BS Computer Science or related technical degree required.
  • 5+ years of Web development experience.
  • Experience in program management, product management, professional services, or engineering management.
  • Understanding of HTML, XML, Internet architectures, Networking technology, Web services, and Windows client application technology.
  • Solid understanding of Lamp and Windows operating environments.
  • Familiarity with MacroMedia ColdFusion development environments.
  • CMS experience is desired.
  • Understanding of the search engine space, wireless industry, and advertising industry is a plus.
  • Publishing industry experience is desirable, ideally online publishing, as is e-commerce experience

This is a hands-on position with lots of growth potential but requiring smart deployment of resources. A willingness to personally tackle and complete tasks large and small is an absolute requirement, as is the flexibility to work additional hours as necessary including occasionally being on call on weekend and evenings.
