"Mad Men" won the Emmy for best drama Sunday night, the second year in a row that the show has captured this award.

I know that you are wondering the same thing that I am. If they can make a great TV show about people in advertising set in the early 1960s how come they don't make a show about learning technologists working today? I mean, our lives have as much drama as Don Draper, Pete Campbell, Joan, Peggy and the rest of the Mad Men crew.

So in 35 years when our children are watching "Learning Tech People" (or whatever they call our "Mad Men" spinoff) how will we compare to the knowledge workers at Sterling Cooper:

    They drank like we blog.

They smoked like we download podcasts.

They flirted like we build to Wikis.

They slept around like we lecture capture.

They had great suits and hats. We have Kindles and iPhones.

They took two hour martini lunches. We add feeds to our RSS readers.

They had secretaries. We have Google Docs.

They recreated with nicotine and alcohol, we recreate by surfing the Web. In the end, who can say which addictions are worse?

  • The IT Crowd is a great show. However, it's a comedy, which is the only way a show about computers will ever succeed.

  • Why there will never be a Inst Tech series

  • The list of comparisons alone show why this show will never be on TV.
My staffs deal with instructors, students and administrators, often acknowledging "You can't make this stuff up!" While we all have Blogs, iPhones (or equivalent), Wiki's, Facebook pages and tweet, and do all the things listed, it is our adventures with new technologies and the (fill in the descriptive blank here) users we support that would make a show easily as interesting as the IT Crowd. From calming down overenthusiastic experimenters with other world expectations to dragging some, kicking and screaming into the 20th (never mind the 21st) Century....."You Can't Make this stuff up"

  • Admittedly, most of the IT folk I know drink beer, not hard liquor - but they drink funky microbrews, so it can still be a period piece.

And they (male and female) can drink just as well as the Mad Men, thank you very much.

They can even drink, code, and Tweet about it at the same time... and I'd like to see Don Draper try that.
