  • My Media Consumption: Content, Format, Platform and Sources

Been thinking about my media consumption diet. What I consume, and what I do not. Below is a quick estimation of the content, format, platform and sources of the media I consume.

A couple of things stand out from these lists. No media through cable, satellite or broadcast TV. Almost never go to movies, Rarely purchase books at bookstores.

Somewhat surprised how restricted my media diet looks, and how only a few "sources" (or providers) dominate.

    Books:

    Content : Mostly non-fiction
Format: Digital (audiobook, e-book) and Paper
    Platform: iPod (audibooks), Kindle, Paper
Sources: Amazon (Audible.com, Kindle Store, Amazon Prime), College Library

    Television and Movies:

    Content: Drama, Comedy, Documentary
    Format: Streaming, Digital download, DVD
    Platform: MacBook Pro, iPad
    Sources: Netflix, Hulu

    Magazines / Newspapers:

    Content: News, Technology
Format/ Platform: iPad Apps, Web, Paper
Sources: NYTimes, Economist, Wired, Newsweek, Popular Science

    Blogs, Articles, Videos:

    Content: Education and Technology
    Format: Digital
    Platform: MacBook Pro, iPad
Sources: IHE, NYTimes.com, EDUCAUSE.edu, TED, Google News

    Podcasts:

    Content: Education the Technology
Format / Platform: mp3, iTunes, iPod
    Sources: NPR, EDUCAUSE, NYTimes, Cringely

Would be interesting to track how much time I devote to each of these media and how that time is divvied up by platform.

A list of media in which I am not a big consumer would include: games, music, micro-blogging (Twitter), and social networking (Facebook).

What is your media consumption diet?

  • restrictive platforms = restricted media sources?

  • do you think consuming most of your media through such restrictive platforms (Apple products) have anything to do with it? You definitely have fewer options/more obstacles for consuming a lot of digital content....

  • I have some similarities: books (print, library, Kindle). Movies and tv (Netflix).

But Apple plays little role in my life. I don't use iTunes for podcasts, preferring RSS feeds into Google Reader. I use a Windows laptop instead of MacBook or iPad.

Another difference: my primary news source is the Web. A bunch of blogs do heavy lifting for me, especially as filters and curators. Google News is handy, as are pointers from various folks on Twitter and Facebook.

Perhaps an older difference is that I don't consume current tv content. I see some programs, timeshifted via DVD (Netflix, library), along with others via YouTube. As a family we maintain a strict no-tv media diet, which has been a good thing for years.

  • media consumption vs. attention span

  • It's very interesting that your consumption is almost entirely electronic. I would be curious to know how quickly you move from one source to another, even without thinking about it. In other words, what is your average attention span when working between these media? I would guess, although I have nothing like proof, that the highly accessible nature of electronic media means that we spend less time on each before our attention gets diverted to another. If your media were harder (e.g. books and newspapers), it would make more sense to devote your attention thoroughly to one before moving to another, because of the (albeit minimal) extra energy expended in picking up paper and finding your place, then neatly putting it down again.

Because I am a student in the midst of the information age, I feel somewhat compelled to keep my distance from electronic media as much as possible. I never watch TV, rarely movies, and although audiobooks are a great tool when I'm trying to multitask, I stick to the paper stuff as much as possible. I've found that it's a constant struggle to be engaged with electronic media, with all its potential, and not get sucked into its sensational aspects.
