  • Amazing Slide Deck From Gates

By Joshua Kim October 19, 2010 8:30 pm EDT

Here is a slide deck from a presentation that Josh Jarrett, Senior Program Officer in Education, Postsecondary Success at the Gates Foundation, gave on the 9/10/10.

If I could think of any slide deck that I think should be passed around the higher ed world, this would be it.

Ideally, all of us would be able to get Jarrett to come to our campuses - this talk is now first on my list of presentations that I think would draw the most productive discussion and debate.

What is most interesting from my perspective are the "five trends" that Jarrett is watching (starting slide 21), and the challenges enumerated as "waves" (on slide 39).

What has your institution / organization's reaction been to the Next Generation Learning Challenges? How can we join the Gates Foundation in supporting and participating in their efforts?

  • If you've been monitoring the news regarding for-profit high education lately, this won't come as a surprise, but a substantial portion of my students don't have a home computer or a smart phone. In building systems for those privileged enough to have these tools, we're disenfranchising those that aren't.

  • I appreciate that Gates is putting so much time and money into education, but, as I've said before, no amount of technology can replace or boost the cognitive effort a human being must exert to gain a deep understanding of Hamlet, the Civil War, the Dirac Equation, or the arguments for and against punctuated equilibrium in evolutionary biology.

And yes, even though the goals of the Foundation appear to be noble, the results may in fact further marginalize those on the losing edge of the digital divide. Many school libraries can't even afford books, much less Kindles.

  • I saw the 9/10 presentation by Josh Jarrett and had the dame reaction as Joshua Kim. I have circulated the deck widely in Kentucky and recommend others do likewise.
